The unique work of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis has become a source of inspiration and a model for generations of artists. However, the creative connection between Stasys Eidrigevičius and Čiurlionis is different. Having grown up with reproductions of Čiurlionis’s works since his school days, Eidrigevičius nurtures a special relationship with this icon of Lithuanian art. He calls Čiurlionis a kindred spirit, expresses respect for him, and thanks him for a shared worldview. Because of their similar perception of the world, Stasys engages with Čiurlionis as an equal in his creative process.
Understanding Čiurlionis’s work requires a deeper, sometimes even transcendent perspective. At the core of Čiurlionis’s art lies nature and a world of fairy tales, while Stasys tends to depict the world through figures and objects in a grotesque manner, revealing its absurd and paradoxical nature. Nevertheless, their works are visually close. Both artists use similar techniques: pastel, tempera, watercolor, pencil. They are united by the minimalism of imagery and the transcendental ambiguity of meaning. A depicted figure, object, animal, or bird becomes a symbol that expresses more than what is visible to the eye.
Perhaps for this reason, both Čiurlionis’s and Eidrigevičius’s work is especially appreciated in Japan. Stasys’s courage to create based on his unique vision of the world opened the doors to the art world in the broadest sense. His name is known from West to East – from the United States to Japan.
