A Buddhist Perspective on the World and Its Transcendence

Public Lecture with Ayya Piyadassī (Aloka Centre)

July 22, 6 pm

Registration coming soon

What do Buddhists mean by “the world”? What does it consist of, and why should it be “transcended”? This lecture invites us to view the world through a Buddhist lens – exploring what constitutes it, which characteristics are common to all forms of life, and why the goal of the Buddhist path is to transcend the world while helping others do the same. Both the external world – Buddhist cosmology – and the internal world – Buddhist psychology – will be considered, along with the points at which they intersect and what lies beyond them.

Ayya Piyadassī is a Theravāda Buddhist nun of Lithuanian descent. She has been practising Buddhist meditation since 2007, and since 2013 she has done so as an ordained nun. In Myanmar, where she was ordained and spent nearly seven years, she not only deepened her meditation practice but also completed a master’s degree in Buddhism and the Pali language. Currently, under the guidance of Venerable Luangta Narongsak, a monk of the Thai forest tradition, she lives and teaches Buddhist theory and practice at the Aloka Centre in Klaipėda District.

Lecture is part of the public program accompanying the exhibition Another Turn of the Sleepers.

Please note that filming and photography may take place during the event.
