Lecture “Industry and Modernism: From Ideas of Progress to Industrial Heritage”

Drawing on her book Progreso meteoras and the history of the Panevėžys Sugar Factory, architectural historian Marija Drėmaitė will discuss the idea of the factory as a model of modern architecture, its implementation in practice, and contemporary society’s concern with industrial heritage.

The discussion will be held in Lithuanian at the Urban Change Pavilion. Participation in the event is free.

Marija Drėmaitė is an architectural historian, exhibition curator and author. She researches twentieth-century architecture, urbanism and cultural heritage and is a professor at Vilnius University. She has written and edited the books Progreso meteoras (2016), Baltic Modernism (2017), Optimizmo architektūra (2018), ARNO FUNKcionalizmas (2022) and Jūs gaunate butą (2023).

Urban Change Pavilion Public Programme

Over the past decade, Panevėžys has undergone significant changes in its architecture, public spaces and cultural infrastructure. The Urban Change Pavilion talk series invites a critical reflection on these transformations and asks how urban change can involve local initiatives, respond to social and cultural challenges, and address a rapidly changing ecological environment.
