Mies van der Rohe Award: Five Projects Selected to Represent Lithuania

The Mies van der Rohe Award (EU Mies Award) is a prestigious European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, established in 1987. From all the projects proposed to represent Lithuania, the Board of the Lithuanian Union of Architects (LAS) has selected five.

The Mies van der Rohe Award is one of the most renowned architecture awards in Europe. It is organized by the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, a Barcelona-based foundation established to preserve and promote the creative legacy of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Presented every two years, the award aims to recognize outstanding architectural works across Europe, promote high-quality, sustainable, and innovative architecture, and highlight the importance of architecture in society. The prize is awarded for architectural excellence, functionality, innovation, sustainability, and the project’s impact on both the environment and the community.

The main venue for the award and related events is Barcelona, Spain, home to the famous Barcelona Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe. However, the competition accepts project submissions from all EU member states and some other European countries. Eligible projects must be newly completed architectural works and can be nominated by national architects’ associations, independent experts, European architecture institutions, or the architects themselves.

Lithuanian architects have previously found success in the Mies van der Rohe Awards: several have been nominated, and in 2022, the reconstruction project of the National Gallery of Art in Vilnius was among the finalists.

This year, five projects will represent Lithuania, including the contemporary art museum “Stasys Museum” in Panevėžys.
The authors of the project are: Aurimas Syrusas, Greta Brimė, Ričardas Bertašius, Aurelija Kniukštaitė, Eglė Gečaitė, Ieva Sirijatavičiūtė, Kotryna Bajorinaitė, and Jonė Virbickaitė.
